Sages
Sages are the guardians between worlds that permanently reside in one place- the Hall of Souls. Sages have the ability to travel to any one particular realm, but their permanent residence (or home) is the Hall itself.
As previously stated, the purpose of the Sages is to guard and restrict access to those wishing to cross over between worlds/realms. They have complete and utter control over all the gateways, and their word is law. They also provide advice and guidance, if necessary.
There are four Sages, each of varying backgrounds, heritage, history, etc. Not much is known about each individual Sage, however, they are known to be unpredictable, easily angered and typically referred to as "oddities" appearance wise. They are usually comprised of crosses of various races, some previously unheard of.
Sages possess various abilities. They prefer to interact very little with individuals outside their own realm, or with each other for that matter. They're typically very solitary people. When they do interact with realms, they are treated with the utmost respect and even a bit of reverence. They are, in essence, the ultimate entities. They do not typically form relationships of any kind, nor do they engage in sexual activity unless for the purpose of producing a new heir, or Sage-in-training.
The Hall of Souls
The Hall of Souls is almost exactly how it sounds- it's comprised of a hallway (no one knows if this hallway exists within a building, etc, just that it's There) filled with multiple doors, each door leading to another realm. Individuals can die wandering the Hall of Souls, as only its keepers (the Sages) know where each door leads.
The building itself, from the inside, appears to be old, yet clean and ornate. Each door is exactly alike- a huge oaken door with small intricate leaf-work carvings with golden hinges, knobs, etc. It is said that only the Sages can decipher the door's true form or appearance, which allows them to recognize the door as a specific realm's gateway.
The gateways from each realm to the Hall of Souls itself is widely known from realm to realm. Each realm is aware of the gateway between the Hall of Souls and their own home realm, and can travel there if necessary (however, it is recommended that only the serious travel there, because, as previously mentioned, individuals can die in the Hall of Souls, wandering around for ages as their surroundings are identical).
Each Sage has their own room within the Hall of Souls, whose entrance is also indistinguishable from all the other doors lining the Hall. Each Sage room is modified by the Sage themselves to suit their likes and dislikes. No one, aside from other Sages, have seen a Sage-room.
