The Abyss separates the fallen world from the supernal realms (the source of magic) above. The Abyss however is not just a gaping chasm, creatures of unimaginable horror live in the Abyss. The Abyss is also somewhat sentient in nature. The abyss has a primary goal of eliminating magic from the World. The best way to think of the Abyss is like a kind of Super Hell.
